If you don't leave him to die the first time you see him he never dies. He just hangs there squawking forever. You don't have to deal with him later though, which is nice. Actually he won’t. If you leave him in Deepnest he will stay there the rest of the game. He only dies if you leave to the mercy of the Vengefly King.

Pretty sure that whenever you save Zote in Deepnest, he will appear in the Colosseum, regardless of your completion as otherwise you will be locked out of an achievement.
